THE PROJECT
Since the beginning of 1998, based on the results of the "Project for the rescue of the audio and musical archives of the Teatro alla Scala", Milano per la Scala Foundation, as part of its Special Projects, has promoted and coordinated the feasibility study of the DAM project, which was set up to provide the Teatro alla Scala with an integrated system that would allow it to acquire, classify and make available its " heritage " and archives in digital form. The production plan for this project began in January 1999.
The original objectives of the DAM project, defined in agreement with the Superintendence and the operational departments of the Teatro alla Scala, were as follows
- To provide the Artistic Director and the Stage Manager with an effective operational tool for the daily and economic management of the theatre production;
- To provide the management with data and information useful for the implementation of an effective management control system;
- To provide La Scala with a global archive of its precious heritage, which can also be used for collateral initiatives.
Milano per la Scala created a "co-production prototype", which was completely innovative at the time, and in which the Teatro alla Scala, in the role of a reference cultural institution, the University Research, the pool of specific companies with their high technical skills and economic contribution, and the Foundation itself, in the role of a link between the parties, operated for several years. It is only recently that the DAM project has been fully internalised by the Teatro alla Scala, while maintaining the link with Milano per la Scala and with the companies on the economic funding and technical support front of the project.
Thanks to the DAM, it is possible to access the artistic heritage of La Scala in real-time to make the best use of past knowledge and experience in the creation of new productions. In its first phase, the project created nine digital archives that are now active in the management, conservation and cataloguing of the artistic heritage: costumes, costume accessories, stage props, posters, photographs, sketches, drawings, sound recordings. This represented the new starting point for the subsequent creation of a centralized intranet application - La Scala DAM - which made the archives and all the program data of La Scala performances from 1950 to today available not only to current users (Archive and warehouse managers) but also to the Superintendency, the Directorates, and all the Departments of the Theater.
Milano per la Scala is the only institution that has always believed in, supported, and stimulated the DAM project over the years. Now that the DAM is finally published and made available to all interested parties, Milano per la Scala is very proud to have contributed to the conception and been the organizational and economic engine of this ambitious project.
